Local Area
The most famous attraction in Parkes is the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope star of the movie “The Dish”. It is situated 26km north of Parkes and is a must see on any driving holiday through NSW. The 64 metre wide dish stands impressively over farmland. The Visitor Discovery Centre is where visitors can explore the world of astronomy, with hands on exhibits, displays and the 3D theatre. Enjoy a coffee or a meal at the award winning Dish Cafe or make use of the free BBQ and picnic facilities.

Located on the northern side of town is the Henry Parkes Centre, incorporating the Parkes Visitor Information Centre and four unique collections. These are The King’s Castle Elvis Exhibit, Parkes Motor Museum, Henry Parkes Museum and the Antique Machinery Collection.
Get your photo taken with the impressive Sir Henry Parkes Statue which is located in the CBD, surrounded by a formation of water fountains representing the Southern Cross.

Cooke Park Cenotaph is located in the centre of town and was dedicated on April 23rd 2004. It identifies the names of Parkes Shire residents who paid the supreme sacrifice in WW1, WW2, the Korean War and the Vietnam War
Memorial Hill is the best vantage point for magnificent views over Parkes and surrounding farmland and the 33 metre high Shrine of Remembrance is the most visible landmark in Parkes.
Unique Events in the Parkes Shire
Parkes Elvis Festival is held the 2nd week in January each year to celebrate the birthday of the “King of Rock and Roll”. It is five jam packed days of Elvis themed entertainment.

Tullamore Irish Festival is held every Easter and is a feast of Irish music and dancing.
The Trundle ABBA Festival in April has tribute bands, singing competitions and much more at this family friendly event.
The June Long Weekend is famous for the Parkes Picnic Races. Have a great day at the races and get glammed up for the best dressed events.
Astrofest is held in July and endeavours to bring world renowned astronomers, both professional and amateurs to Parkes.
Trundle Bush Tucker Day is held the first Saturday of September every year and dishes up a day of fun for participants and spectators. It features bush cooking competitions, free bush tucker tasting and a wholesome program of bush entertainment.
The 2PK Parkes Country Music Festival is held on the Long Weekend in October each year and features country music singing and many competitions.
The Parkes Antique Motor Club Motorcycle Rally is also held on the October Long Weekend.
